Model Behavior
What does it take for people to model behavior every day in all that we do? Why is it necessary to remind people to be kind and thoughtful to one another? Here at the Age of Grace, the focus is on many of the celebrated months, days, or weeks designated for health awareness, especially as it relates to ‘women of a certain age.’
For one week in February, some people celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week, asking people to step out of their normal routine or comfort zone and attempt a new random act of kindness each day during that celebratory week. I missed it, though. I would like to think one would like to exhibit model behavior on a daily basis and not have to be reminded.
Was anyone a Brownie or Girl Scout when they were a little girl? Except for the annual Girl Scout Cooke drive, I don’t recall hearing much about this beautiful organization that helps to empower young ladies. The Girl Scouts celebrated 100 years in 2012. 50 million girls have worn the Girl Scout uniform in the past 100 years. This organization truly embraced respect, kindness, and dignity. I was among those millions of girls who have worn the Girl Scout uniform. I still remember The Girl Scout Pledge:
On my honor
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place,
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
Those were the days when model behavior was instilled and lived every day. What happened along the way? Did social media destroy our awareness and how we interact and treat others? Lapses of decorum, manners-related problems, and completely inappropriate behavior are what we see and live every day. We forgot respect, dignity, and kindness. If it takes an annual week, as the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation instructed, to remind us to perform random acts of kindness, then so be it.
How do you exhibit model behavior?
Love this Eugenia! So in agreement with you about random acts of kindness. Why do we have reminded? I believe the advancement of technology has impacted us negatively in terms of being present for each other and reaching out and touching someone! Great post!
April, thank you, I appreciate your comment about random acts of kindness.
