You may recall the slogan from the American Express commercials in the Nineties; “membership has its privileges.” As a member of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, I previewed “In Full Bloom,” the 2022 Philly Flower Show green space theme, the day before its official opening to the public.
The Philly Flower Show, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, is the world’s largest and longest-running event. This year’s extravaganza marks the 194th flower show since its inception.
According to the PHS website, the PHS is a non-profit organization founded in 1827 that fosters tree-planting, greening initiatives, and gardening education in the Philadelphia area.
The show theme, “In Full Bloom,” takes advantage of the natural park setting and the many flowers blooming this season. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society uses horticulture to advance health and well-being.
Did the health pandemic stay-at-home mandate move us to appreciate our homes more? More than ever, people are turning to green space gardens and extending their living spaces to the outdoors.
My daughter and I walked over 10,000 steps, covering the 15 acres of large-scale green space exhibits featuring backyard sanctuaries and places to eat, drink, and shop.
The show wow factor for me was the fresh bloom designs by Valley Forge Flowers at the Olmsted Gazebo.
And it was relaxing to relish the spectacular view of the show. From where? From the Boat House overlooking Meadow Lake while watching planes land at the Philadelphia International Airport.
Beyond the garden displays, the Flower Show hosts a major juried competition in horticulture and floral arranging. And not to forget to mention experiences like gardening talks, demonstrations, butterfly gardens, potting parties, and family-friendly activities.
The 2022 Philly Flower Show, “In Full Bloom,” doesn’t close until Sunday, June 19, Father’s Day.
Tickets: Adults $50 (online or onsite)
◊ The PHS website lists special pricing for seniors, students, and children
♦ You can reserve parking online for one of the five lots
◊ Available, the Philadelphia Trolley Works courtesy shuttle to/from the lots
As a PHS member, I received two complimentary tickets and the opportunity to preview this year’s show from 12-4 the day before the event officially opened.
Even though, as of 2021, PHS has a membership of 13,000, attending the member preview show proved more appealing with fewer people and the picture-perfect weather and temperatures.
My photos here don’t capture the complete bounty and beauty of the spectacular gardening “In Full Bloom.”
