I’m not sweating the small stuff in Pennsylvania with no clear end to Coronavirus quarantine measures. What am I doing more of during my sheltering at home? One consideration I’m asking is whether antiperspirants and deodorants are toxic to women’s health.
It’s not just guilty pleasures binge-watching Netflix’s Grace and Frankie this week. Amid COVID-19, it is a beneficial time to purge and purify my body and mind. Have you ever heard the claim that antiperspirants cause breast cancer and Alzheimer’s (ALZ)?
My mother is a breast cancer survivor and is now battling ALZ and ovarian cancer. We know genetics plays a role in cancer diseases, but the quality of life choices can impact cancer as well. Those decisions are about the products we use, what we eat, how much we sleep, exercise, and stress levels.
While cleaning out my toiletry cabinet, I noticed that the antiperspirant in my cabinet contained aluminum. Did you know that aluminum-based compounds, like most antiperspirants, temporarily plug the sweat glands and prevent you from perspiring? I know I didn’t.
Research experts explain that aluminum compounds exist in many products, including food, drinking water, cosmetics, baking tools, and aluminum foil.
The graphic above explains the difference between antiperspirant versus deodorant. Deodorant protects against odor, while antiperspirants keep the sweat and odor down.
I, nearing retirement, am looking to simplify my beauty routine and products; I started using red raspberry seed oil in my nighttime skincare routine. Now a natural deodorant, I discovered Rosy Pits by Megababe, winner of the 2018 Health Magazine Award for Best Deodorant.
When Megababe launched the natural Rosy Pits deodorant in 2018, it attracted so much attention that it sold out on the J.Crew website within eight minutes. Then, an 8,00-person waiting list was promptly acquired before it became available at Ulta.
So what’s all the hype? The deodorant claims to be free of aluminum, alcohol, and baking soda. During this stay-safe, safe home time, I thought I could test the waters by not using an antiperspirant but a natural deodorant choice.
After a few weeks of switching from an antiperspirant to Megababe’s Rosy Pits, I noticed the scent was refreshing. It also wards off body odor, which is my main concern. The formula includes corn starch to help with moisture absorption.
As you all know, going natural or organic always comes with a higher price tag. The Rosy pits cost $14.00.
Please know that I did not receive compensation for reviewing this product. Studies linking aluminum use to breast cancer and ALZ have not proven conclusive. I don’t know if antiperspirants and deodorants could harm women’s health.
