Hello, Beauties🌸 This week’s post the 2019 Met Gala: Camp Extraordinary.
It’s always worth revisiting the Met Gala’s history. It’s an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Gallery. The party marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s yearly themed fashion exhibit.
Tickets cost about $30,000 each, and you can attend as long as you receive an exclusive invitation from Anna Wintour, the event’s orchestrator. Generally, between 500 and 600 guests attend—the seating chart, drafted in December by Vogue staff. The 2018 Met Gala raised over $13 million.
The exhibit “Camp: Notes on Fashion” opens on May 9 and will remain on view until September 8. Last year’s Catholic “Heavenly Bodies” exhibit, the most visited exhibition in the Met’s history, attracted 1,659,647 visitors.
This year’s theme, Camp: Notes to Fashion, was inspired by the 1964 essay “Notes on Camp” by American writer, filmmaker, professor, and activist Susan Sontag. Ms. Sontag first brought to light the word, the idea, and the culture of extravagance—the concept of extreme excess, perhaps even absurdity.
Now that we understand where and what the theme encompasses, let’s see how A-listers interpreted the exhibitions’ theme, AKA the dress code for the party.
I like to start with the gala host, U.S. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, wearing a Chanel gown designed by the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Gwenyth Paltrow, Kate Moss, and Penelope Cruz, to name a few, opted for understated elegance at the festive fashion event.
The outrageous Met Gala Pink Carpet Camp Looks: Where do I start? My favorites are Billy Baldwin, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Cardi B, the ultimate Camp exaggeration.
Here are more glitz and campy glamour looks that didn’t disappoint: Singer and Actress Janelle Monae, Supermodel Naomi Campbell, and Filmmaker Ava DuVernay.
According to online sources, Tracee’s look nods to artist Lorraine O’Grady’s participatory performance, Art Is Movement. Attendees in the Harlem African American Day parade dressed up carrying empty gold frames.
Finally, for the second year in a row, my fashion journalist daughter, Channing, received her invitation to cover the 2019 Met Gala Red Carpet.
Finally, for the second year in a row, my fashion journalist daughter, Channing, received her invitation to cover the Met Gala Red Carpet. Every mother desires to see their children live their dreams. I’m so excited for Channing.
Did you follow this year’s Met Gala theme? If yes, what do you think of the A-lister’s interpretation of “Camp?’ Do share your thoughts in the comments section.
As always, thank you for reading. Have a fabulous week.
