October Breast Cancer Awareness at PA State Capital

By now, we all associate the pink ribbon with Breast Cancer Awareness. According to online sources, pink ribbon distribution started in 1991 when it was given to all breast cancer survivors and participants of the Komen New York City Race for the Cure.

The campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness for October gets an A+.  However, the staggering statistics from the American Institute for Cancer Research estimate that 38% of the U.S. breast cancer cases are preventable.  H ?  T re are adaptable habits such as healthy eating, a healthy weight, being physically active, limiting alcohol, and being smoke-free.  There are over 89,00 cases each year that never have to happen.

How about the exceptional promise of survival if caught early?  Hence, there is a massive yearly pink push to get that mammogram. Perform monthly breast exams.  There are now nearly 3 million breast cancer survivors in the United States who are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. My mother is a ten-year double mastectomy survivor.

There is emerging limited research evidence indicates eating more of these foods may reduce risk:
🎀 Non-starchy vegetables – some – asparagus, celery, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, onion, carrots, and Brussels sprouts
◊ Foods containing carotenoids – broccoli, kale, spinach, collards, corn, turnip greens, green peas, and green beans
🎀 Dairy products – low-fat, calcium-rich milk, fortified soy milk, yogurt, and cheese
◊ Diets high in calcium – almonds, artichokes, baked/kidney beans, broccoli, chickpeas, cinnamon, edamame, and oranges
