Every year, I hope to get to Washington, D. C., to be among the many tourists to see the nation’s most extensive collection of cherry blossom trees. On April 28, 2013, I was pumped for spring to be in the nation’s capital for my first Nike Women’s Half-Marathon. That is not exactly how I planned to view the over 30,000 pink trees.
Instead of being among the thousands who ventured to the National Cherry Blossom Festival, I was among the over 17,000 women who walked, ran, or trotted 13.1 miles around the perimeter of the Tidal Basin. In late April 2013, the cherry blossoms probably passed their peak bloom date. That didn’t matter because I do recall the day being a picture of spring perfection.
I write this post because on Sunday, April 19, in New York City, thousands of ladies worldwide will again hit the streets for yet another half-marathon. Once again, there will be a health and wellness expo on Friday and Saturday before the shotgun starts on Sunday.
Meanwhile, back here in Central Pennsylvania, we get pumped for spring with the 23-acre botanical garden at Hershey Gardens. There are no cherry blossoms, but 30,000 tulips are set to bloom within the next six weeks. I have special memories of this garden because I was married there in 1984.
Are you pumped for spring? What signifies spring in your area? ย Have a fabulous week!
