Pinking of You
Did you know 1 in 3 women will have cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 8 will have breast cancer?
October is Breast Cancer Awareness, the annual national calendar focusing on awareness for women to get a mammogram and reminders to perform monthly self-checks. Breast Cancer Awareness is an effort to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of breast cancer through education on symptoms and treatment. Supporters hope that more excellent knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates, and that money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable permanent cure.
After skin cancer breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. Breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but it’s far more common in women.
As with many other illnesses, early detection is critical; some of the signs and symptoms may include the following:
- A breast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue
- Bloody discharge from the nipple
- Change in size or shape of the breast
- Changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling
- Inverted nipple
- Peeling, scaling, or flaking of the nipple or breast skin
- Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orange
When to see a doctor:
If you find a lump or other change in your breast – even if a recent mammogram was regular – make an appointment with your doctor.
