Fashion Formula for Fall 2013
As I type, New York City Fashion Week is full force, showing Spring 2014 collections! NYFW is where colors, beauty trends, and styles emerge, featuring what’s “in” and “out” for the coming season. That’s how it works: fashion is generally six months ahead of the retail schedule, retail meaning when you can make purchases in the new season. The prominent fashion weeks are held in the four fashion capitals of the world, New York City, London, Milan, and finally, Paris, which puts on the biggest shows. Chanel, anyone?
Here’s a short history lesson on how Fashion Week came to be. In 1943, the first New York Fashion Week was held, with one primary purpose: to distract attention from French fashion during World War II, when workers in the fashion industry could not travel to Paris. This was the opportune moment, as designers in America had been thought to rely on the French for inspiration for centuries.
One woman, fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, wanted to give American fashion designers a chance to showcase their works and draw attention away from fashionable Paris shows. She organized an event called Press Week” to showcase American designers for fashion journalists who had previously neglected their innovations and fashion Weeks started as a trade-only event that was open to buyers and manufacturers. But over the years. They have become glamorous entertainment and media events, attracting celebrities to front-row VIP seating.
The New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 shows started last week at Lincoln Center with Mercedes-Benz, the event’s major sponsor since 2009. It is a fashion festival, not only are the fashion shows attended by invitation only with fashion editors, journalists, buyers, manufacturers and now many bloggers covering the shows. The runway shows usually last from 15 to 20 minutes, although the waiting show start time can take up to two hours to start.
Even though NYFW is featuring runway shows for Spring 2014, here are some updates to consider for this year’s Fall Fashion Trends:
Color:
Earlier this year, I shared information on how fashion colors are determined every season. Emerald green was the color used in the Spring of 2013. For Fall 2014, Cobalt Blue is a hot trend in fashion, although mustard and berry are also great color options.
Anything Leather:
Boots:
I love boots for the fall. If you’re going to invest in a shoe this season, make it a bootie—hitting at the ankle. The preferred heel for many fall runways was a silhouette we all will give thanks for a thicker, stacked heel (meaning easy to walk and extra comfort). Other boot styles to consider are knee-high boots if you can pull them off, flat-riding boots, pointy-toe wedge boots, and wedge boots.
Texture:
Since learning about textiles in college, I have had an appreciation for texture and opulent details in my clothing, especially dresses, coats, and jackets. This fall, the textures I like are houndstooth, jacquard, and plaids; they look inviting. I hope to score a few key pieces that are examples of texture. The collage below expresses some of the textures I hope to find.
