Hats Off
One of my favorite things to do is watch black-and-white movies. You know, the ones with great storylines, where the girl always gets the guy, and all issues are resolved in two hours. Women were sophisticated and elegant in their matching ensembles, with their handbags, gloves, and hats.
When I attended a funeral recently, I was reminded that hats were once a staple in many women’s wardrobes, regardless of their social status. At the funeral, I saw a parade of white hats. Perhaps this is typical funeral attire for the wives of dignitaries or bishops. I’m not sure. However, I did enjoy the selection and styles, especially my sister-in-law’s hat. The hats at the funeral reminded me of being a child wearing my new Easter hat, gloves, and handbag.
For many African American women, looking your best from head to toe is essential when going to church, and the hat is one of the most crucial features. The act of covering your head during worship has its roots in scripture. When the Apostle Paul declared that women must cover their heads during worship (1 Corinthians 11:15), according to the book, “C” Owns A Brief History of Church Hats.”It has become a tradition for many women who want to show respect to God while adding some pizzazz to their presence.
I love this cape/wrap (and I do mean love it), but I usually don’t have a chance to wear it unless I need something elegant to throw over a gown or cocktail dress. Today, for my post, I decided to wear my wrap and have fun with a hat. I love the opportunity to throw on a wrap for a dramatic, elegant effect.
(pause to throw the cape over my shoulder, you see? What’s to love?)
The wrap was one of my first purchases from Gilt.com. It is wool with Pom-Pom Fur Trim in Rabbit.
Are you wearing hats off or on? Are you comfortable wearing a hat in church? Do you wear hats other than in cold weather?
Next time I home, that necklace might come back to New York with me, :-p
Kidding! (But not really) I really like this outfit and your hat. I will wear a hat whenever, to hide my hair to just to add something to my outfit.
Thanks for your comment; Your welcome to the necklace when you come back home; I forgot how fun a hat can be and very forgiving on a bad hair day.
I’ve always wanted to wear a big, beautiful statement hat but I’ve never really found the right moment to do it. Perhaps I should figure out a time to host a girls tea, with a hat-mandatory dress code!
I agree Arianna, host a tea in NYC at one of those fab places with mandatory hat requirement. Thanks for commenting.
I love wearing hats whenever I get the opportunity. Usually if it’s cold outside a I love wearing berets. While on vacation in the western carribean I wore a fedora. I plan to attend my nieces wedding in august and I plan to wear a beautiful lavender hat. You look beautiful and lets celebrate the next outing by wearing a hat!
Cynthia, who knew? Never knew you wore so many hats!!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the hats you wear.
Eugenia love the hat! Hats are great accessories as well as serving other purposes. I believe hats add another
Level of style, grace and elegance contingent on the style and the person wearing it! I love a nice
Hat from time to time!
April, thank you for your comment regarding how a hat can add a level of style, grace and elegance.
I remember seeing you rock a Coach hat on a rainy day, it was so appropriate and cute!
