I don’t follow professional or college football until a significant game or the Super Bowl. I realize that when a player stands on the sidelines or sits on the bench, they are not involved in the football game. I see many men standing on the sidelines regarding their health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research shows that many men only go to the doctor when sick.
Now that November is here, it is time to change the face of men’s health once again (pun intended). Since 2003, millions have joined the men’s health movement through the Movember Foundation, raising $650 million and funding over 1,000 programs focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical inactivity.
Hopefully, during this annual event, we will see many men not normally sporting facial hair grow a mustache or beard for the 30 days of November. The goal is to increase awareness and knowledge regarding early cancer detection, diagnosis, and effective treatments and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Important Fast Facts on Prostate Cancer:
Here is a quick reminder about male organs. The prostate and testes are essential parts of the male reproductive system. The prostate is a small gland below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It produces the fluid that transports the sperm. The testes create the male sex organ hormone testosterone, which makes the sperm.
Testicular Cancer:
The Risk Factors for Testicular Cancer (blurred on InfoGraph above;)
◊ Babies born with undescended testicles
- Congenital (born with) abnormalities of a testicle, penis, kidney, and inguinal hernias (hernias in the groin area)
◊ A family history of testicular cancer
- Using Marijuana
Typically, my focus here at The Age of Grace is on women. Women can influence their husbands, fathers, brothers, nephews, and friends to keep yearly check-ups. We all know knowledge is power. Men, let’s use this knowledge. Please don’t stand on the sidelines this November; take charge of your health. Get in the game of managing your medical goals.
Have a fabulous week!
You are so right that we women can influence the men in our lives to take action or at least consider! We must continue to educate and share in order to bring awareness to preventable conditions. It starts with lifestyle choices and taking action as you share so lovingly. Thank you for writing it on our walls!
Sepia,
Thank you for stopping by The Age of Grace. It just sickens me when I hear of men that are dying from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is such a preventable disease, very slow growing. I will keep shouting to the hill tops to someone listens.
Men and their health…that’s a tough subject. I have to beg my husband to have check-ups. You look positively radiant, Eugenia. Love the little pattern play with bag and shoe. Very classic with a touch of daring.
Glenda,
Yes, I tackled a tough subject…men and their health. I took a chance with the mixing of pattern, really trying not to look matchy matchy, that’s easy. At this age, it’s all about being daring.
Great article and Love your outfit!
Cynthia,
Thank you for your kind words my friend.
